Is it so long? Three weeks have already passed since I met Silvia in Tokyo! Meeting her was so fun, we talked so much that there was no time left to take pictures! Everybody knows that girls talk a lot but when you meet a really special friend, you feel that you can talk for days and days with her. So I hope that we can see each other soon again to continue talking and eventually take some pictures!
This month’s Soap Challenge, hosted by Amy Warden at Great Cakes Soapworks is about combing techniques. For the demo vide, Amy used a new swirl she called the serpentine swirl and her soap turned out so beautiful that I thought I wanted to make something similar. So I made my combs and when I decided to do some more research on combing techniques I found videos on paper marbling. All the patterns were stunning and each one was saying “try me” 🙂 I even thought of buying the dyes, paper and all necessary equipment for paper marbling so I could try them.
Eventually, I did a mixture of techniques and got this.
First, I poured the colors in a faux-funnel style. Then I used a comb to go forth and back exactly in the way Amy showed in her demo video. For the third go, I used a rake whose pins were placed twice wider than the comb and went from left to right making wavy movements.
I wondered how to call the pattern and came up with names like “Serpentine swirl with a twist” and “Fleur de Lis.”
The soap is scented with fragrance oils of freesia and (a hint of) sandalwood. It smells fresh and clean so much so that I have decided to use this combination in other soaps, too.
I am pleased with how the soap turned out. Needless to say, I really want to try so many other patterns and see how they work in soap.
I wish you all a pleasant weekend and fun doing what you want or have to do!
Maya
Your soaps are always beautiful!!
Thank you Jj!
Breathtaking, Maya!
Thank you, Claudia!
I love your mix of color 😊
Thank you, Yvonne!
Beautiful! Gorgeous colors! I also found some beautiful paint marbling images by accident while looking up soap combs! Us soapers can learn a lot from painting techniques too, right! 🙂
Thank you, Caroline. Yes, there are so many things we can learn from other crafts? I am still dicovering new things and always wonder if they can be applied in soapmaking 🙂
Frozen blue is a lovely name for this soap ! :0) the swirl is amazing and the colors match perfectly :0) I like it very much
Thank you, Latachuelabonita. I could not think of anything else when I saw the final result 🙂 I am glad the name sounds good to you, too.
Very “cool” swirls! 🙂 Get it…Frozen Blue…cool… Hehe. Absolutely gorgeous soap!
Thank you, Katy! I am glad the name sounds good not only to me 🙂
I like that you used the faux funnel pour to first apply your highlight colors – lovely soap and excellent name!
Thank you , Lisa. Yes, I was tempted to use parallel lines at first but … I am pleased with the final result. I think the lack of uniformity makes the pattern somewhat intriguing.;-)
Beautiful soap, Maya! The colors and swirls turned out amazing – and I love how you adapted the technique with the faux funnel pour to start out. So many ways to vary this style of swirl!
Thank you, Amy. Yes, there are so many possibilities and so many patterns waiting to be made 🙂 Thank you for showing us the serpentine swirl! It is an amazing technique!
Gorgeous soap, Maya! Love the colors and the pattern. I admire you for being consistent about trying a new technique each month – which you do with aplomb.
My husband said we looked like kindred spirits as we chatted away happily. I do hope we have more chances to talk, and yes, we have to have our pictures taken. 🙂 I wanted to blog about our meeting and I realized we have no photos to show for. :p
Thank you, Silvia. It is a lot of fun trying something new each month and I believe that it helps relieve stress, too 🙂
I think your husband was right. I felt exactly that way and am very much looking forward to our next meeting, hopefully it will be sooner than later. I wanted to blog about our meeting, too, but I will wait until the next one 🙂
It’s so beautiful! Almost mesmerizing 🙂
Thank you, Sue!
Wow Maya, stunning soap, so wintery and perfect! =)
Thank you, Amy!
Wow. This is a really gorgeous soap. Love the colors and the delicate swirls.
Thank you, Thevillagesoapsmith! I am happy with the final result and will probably use the color combination and this swirl again soon.
Just beautiful, Maya! The colors are gorgeous!
Thank you, Janelle. This time I have no complaint about the colors 🙂
I’m glad you and Silvia had a great time together, but yes, definitely next time you two need to take some pictures. 😉
You did a beautiful job with the challenge. The design is so delicate and intricate, it is absolutely amazing.
I know! Next time I will keep my camera in my hand and not in the bag! This is a promice!!
Thank you for your kind words about the soap. I like how it turned out and am planning other soaps with this color combination 🙂
Gorgeous, Maya, as always!
Nice to know you had lovely time seeing Silvia, maybe a post about it? 🙂
Thank you, Natalia.
I might have to write a very long post about our meeting as we talked for hours and hours 🙂
Another great success Maya! I cannot wait to see the other creations that will follow along the paper-marbling technique!
This time I have no “complaints” about not using enough mica so I am indeed happy with the way this soap turned out. I hope I can replicate the swirl soon agai 🙂 But, me being me, Imight go with some new swirls before going back to the one above…
Absolutely stunning 🙂
Thank you,Dianne! I thought the same about your swirl and choice of colors for this challenge! The green and sky blue look so fresh and your swirl is perfectly defined. I wish I could get a similar look to some of my soaps!
Wow, Dianne! I just visited you FB and found your soap “Frozen”! I am lost for words! That one is so beautiful! But hten all your soaps are beautiful! It is amazing, how in different parts of the world people have similar visions/ideas.
Beautiful, Maya! I hope you try many paper marbling techniques, I would love to see them!
Thank you, Lisa!
I thought your soap was great with the warm color choice and the beautiful swirl. I love how your swirl is not only on the top surface but gets way down into the soap and is actually an in-depth-swirl, too. I should try that next time!
Very stunning Maya! I love the color combination of the yellow, white and blue- it does look like a flower. You have a nice eye for color!
Thank you, J. Though sometimes my eye for color does not serve me very well I am happy with how it helped this time 🙂
